Real
Britain

Client: Mirror / Reach plc

A series of films unearthing the human stories behind the ‘Real Britain’ column.

Challenge

The ‘Real Britain’ column tasked us with creating a series of emotionally engaging, and thought-provoking films for a number of their stand out features.

This included: Wigan Pier at 80, Britain Talks, Britain Connects, Europe Talks and The World Talks.

These films needed to capture stories across the UK and internationally, requiring us to film with real people in sensitive spaces such as homeless shelters and food banks.

Our production team needed to be empathetic and willing to embrace sensitivity around the subjects we were filming.

Our unique approach

Our approach was built around compassion and understanding. We began by conducting extensive research into the stories and subject matters we were tasked with filming. We needed to fully appreciate and capture their lived experiences in order to create authentic and narratively driven films that were driven by real voices.

We also conducted many pre-interviews to really get to know them before any filming took place.

We approached every story like we were making a documentary for broadcast television. We remained flexible in our approach to ensure we were able to capture unfolding reality as it happened.

Results

Our collaboration with The Mirror over the past few years has turned into a trusting and professional relationship. Our films have helped The Mirror win numerous journalism awards.

Our work for them has also been screened at Parliament in front of MPs, decision-makers, and have even screened on TV.

These films exemplify our best practice. The films are now acting as lasting legacies of the projects and are still making impact to this day.

The films are seen as an innovative way of bringing journalism features to life.

“They care about the films they make and the people they are making them with. The result is magic, films made up of humans not contributors.

We continue to work with Northern Heart because they’re skilled in helping us craft warm, lovely films where contributors really shine through.

Our work requires a lot of trust, whether for the Europe Talks campaign or Wigan Pier Project. Scott and Natasha always hit the perfect note.”
